Workchoice Day 2009
Planning for Workchoice Day
What will WCD be like?
So, you're going on WCD and don't know what it is or what to expect?
Workchoice Day was developed as a way of giving students insight into the career options available in a particular industry. You might think you want to work in a hospital and that the options are to be a doctor or a nurse. But actually there are far more career options in a hospital than that. If you're interested in health and you go to a hospital on Workchoice Day, you'll see the full range of health careers (...) and hear what these people actually do everyday, what training they needed, what their working conditions are, etc, etc.
So WCD isn't so much about work experience as career exposure. It's about helping you find out what people actually do as a lawyer, receptionist, store manager and gives you the chance to work out if that's a job you'd be interested in. It will be different for everyone and it will also depend on what companies you visit, but you'll probably find the whole thing pretty eye-opening. Even just seeing a working environment can help you make decisions about what you do and don't want to do. You might go on WCD and find out that your dream job isn't actually for you! But even if this is the case, you will have learnt a valuable lesson and potentially saved youself a lot of money on training.
To see what people got up to on WCD08, check out the slideshow above. Or to find out the impact it's had on students who went out several years earlier, see our success stories.
