Are you interested in a career in health?
Health is one of the most popular career choices for students but despite this interest, there are still current and projected shortages in all areas of health care.

Many students think of a health career being about hospitals, doctors and nurses, blood and guts. Medicine or nursing are certainly two of the main careers in health, but there is a huge diversity of options and sub-specialisations within each.

A career in health could entail anything from being a GP, ward nurse or care worker to a technician, anaesthetist, theatre nurse or radiographer to a physiotherapist, occupational therapist or psychologist, through to a dentist or pharmacist, and much, much more.

Health professionals also work in areas other than hospitals. There are jobs in rest homes, out in the community, and within the mental health arena.  Plus not only can you work in clinical fields, you can also be involved in health education, sales, information technology, recruitment, administration or management.

A career in health can offer many exciting experiences and opportunities including the ability to travel and work just about anywhere in the world.  Many people choose health as a career pathway that can offer job satisfaction, respect, flexibility and progression.

What’s the difference between temporary, permanent & contract recruitment?
Temping: Working for a temporary agency means that you don’t have to commit to working at one organisation – giving you the flexibility to pick and choose short-term jobs where and when you want to work.  Geneva Health provides short and long-term placements throughout New Zealand for nursing, caregivers, homecare assistants, care assistants, psych assistants and community support workers - from a few shifts per week to full time work.

Permanent Recruitment:  A recruitment agency can help you find a permanent job an organisation.  You will go through the agency’s screening and interview process and then once they’ve established what your skills and experience is and what you’re looking for, they will act on your behalf to find a job with one of their clients.  They then set you up with an interview with the client organisation.  If you are successful, you then begin work as an employee of that organisation.

Contract: A contract position is a short or long-term job or project that has an agreed start and end date.  This could be one week, a month, three months, six months etc. and the process through the recruitment agency will be similar to permanent recruitment.  However in some cases there may be less rigorous interviewing, or the organisation may hire you through your CV and the agency’s recommendation.

Your recruitment agency should provide you help with interview tips, CV formatting, however there are plenty of great resources online that can help with writing your CV and other job-seeking tips.  Another thing to note your agency may ask you to complete behavioural and skills testing during your interview – not as scary as it sounds, and the results are often surprisingly true!

Note: A recruitment agency should always provide you with a free service, even though they are acting on your behalf.  The hiring organisation pays a fee to the agency for successfully filling the job vacancy.
